The 30-Minute Google Business Profile Setup for New River Gorge Businesses

If you do exactly one thing for your business’s online presence this month, make it this one. Your Google Business Profile is the panel that shows up on the right side of Google — and on the map in front of every “near me” search — with your hours, photos, reviews, and directions. It’s free, and for local searches it matters more than your website.

Here’s the whole setup, in about half an hour.

1. Claim it (5 minutes)

Go to google.com/business and search for your business name. If a profile already exists — Google often auto-creates them — claim it rather than making a new one. Verification usually happens by postcard, phone, or video; just start the process today so the clock is running.

2. Get the basics exactly right (10 minutes)

  • Name: your real business name, exactly as it appears on your sign. Don’t stuff keywords in — Google suspends profiles for it.
  • Category: pick the most specific primary category that fits (“Raft trip outfitter,” not “Tourist attraction”). Add secondary categories after.
  • Address & service area: if customers come to you, use your street address. If you go to them (contractors, cleaners), set a service area instead.
  • Hours: real ones, including holiday hours. Nothing kills trust like showing up to a “closed” that Google said was open.
  • Phone & website: use the same phone number and web address everywhere online — consistency is a ranking signal.

3. Add photos that don’t look like stock (10 minutes)

Ten real photos beat one professional one. Your storefront from the road, the dining room mid-lunch, a raft hitting Pillow Rock, your crew. Google’s own data says profiles with photos get more direction requests and website clicks. Add a few every month — recency counts.

4. Turn on the review engine (5 minutes)

In your profile dashboard, grab your review link (Share → Ask for reviews). Put it somewhere you’ll actually use it: a QR code at the register, the bottom of invoices, a follow-up text after a trip. Then respond to every review — the good ones with thanks, the rough ones with grace. Future customers read your responses as closely as the reviews.

The part everyone skips

Post to your profile like it’s a tiny social feed: this weekend’s release schedule, a new menu item, fall hours. Weekly posts keep the profile “fresh” in Google’s eyes, and freshness is one of the few local ranking levers you fully control.
